Way down in the Southwest corner of Georgia resides a small farm/brewery to keep your eye on. Pretoria Fields Collective, founded in 2017 by Dr. Tripp Morgan, is a unique combination of farm, brewery, and tap room. Dr. Morgan had a vision of being able to grow all the ingredients that would go into his brews. After meeting Eric Kirchner (former lead brewer at Russian River Brewing Co. and now Brewmaster at Pretoria Fields) the two are making that dream a reality. They now have four core beers – Gose, IPA, Golden Ale and Stout – plus multiple seasonal beers available in the tap room and in distribution throughout the state.
The first beer I decided to try from Pretoria Fields turned out to be a great choice. I have had some very good stouts from other breweries; but they have mostly had unique adjunct ingredients added to them. What I have been looking for is a good, solid go-to American Stout. Walkers Station Stout hit all the check boxes for me. It pours out a deep dark black color with a thick, mousse-like tan head exhibiting good head retention. No detectable hops aroma, which is fine for the style; but does have those nice roasted coffee, dark chocolate and toffee aromas that are so familiar in a good quality stout. The addition of flaked oats provides it a smooth, creamy mouth feel. The slightly sweet malt backbone is well balanced with a low to moderate level of bitterness.
I’ll be tasting more beers from Pretoria Fields lineup in the near future. Walkers Station gets a thumbs up. I’m very excited about this brewery and look forward to more offerings from them with 100% Georgia grown ingredients. They just recently harvested their first crop of Cascade hops and will be making a “wet hopped” beer exclusively for the tap room.
