Schwarzbier is a dark Lager beer well know in certain regions of Germany. Visually, it could easily be mistaken for a Munich Dunkel or English Porter and it actually lands somewhere in between. It will be a bit drier, roasty and bittersweet than Dunkel. Yet it will not have the burnt characteristics that many porters or stouts may have. All of which combine to make the beer lighter and more drinkable than it appears.
This is the third version of The Silent World Black Lager by Creature Comforts Brewing Co., with the major difference being a lower ABV from 5.5% to 5.0%. If you are curious about the name, the brewery explains the beer as named after “Jacques-Yves Cousteau’s classic film Le Monde du Silence (The Silent World) released in 1956″. If you are into beer can labels that are unique, Creature Comforts is usually good for some fine examples. This beer’s label art is quite nice.
Despite its dark appearance, The Silent World is a visually attractive, inviting beer. It pours dark and clear with a persistent fluffy, off-white head. Gives off malty aromas of mild caramel and roasted malts plus spicy hops. Flavors of dark cocoa and roasted malts greet the palate, as well as, a restrained bitterness that becomes more apparent as it warms; but none of it is harsh. The mouth-feel is smooth and medium bodied and the beer finishes dry and medium length.
Creature Comforts Brewing Co. continues to show such versatility in beer styles with this offering. Their regulars tend to think of the IPAs, Pale Ales, and barrel aged sours they constantly pump out; but they produce some excellent Lagers too. The Silent World is a fine example of Schwarzbier and demonstrates how Lager can be flavorful and unique. While it makes a great winter seasonal, it can easily be enjoyed in the cooler late Fall and early Spring days.
