One of the more exciting undercurrents happening in craft beer right now is a mini surge in breweries making standard American Light Lagers and Pilsners. This is a wonderful trend and craft breweries are starting to stake out some ground versus Big Beer. I knew if craft breweries would turn their attention to the style; with their focus on quality ingredients, they would produce some high quality, tasty beers. I was right and they killing it right now, providing us with some excellent alternatives to the mass produced products on the shelves. Bud Light, Miller Light, Coors Light? No need to stick with those when there are the kind of high quality light Lagers coming out of craft breweries like there are today. As I work my way through some of the local offerings, I am finding some real gems. New Realm Brewing Co.’s United Craft Lager is a perfect example of what I am talking about.

The high quality of United Craft Lager is notable right out of the can. It pours a brilliant, clear pale gold color with fast rising bubbles that develop a fluffy white head exhibiting very good retention. Unlike most mass produced American Pilsners, you can actually smell the hops! You get some nice floral and herbal aromas from Hersbrucker and Hallertau hops with Lemondrop providing a hint of citrus. The malts provide a grainy aroma to the nose as well. Flavors are those nice spicy and herbal notes you come to recognize and love from Hersbrucker and Hallertau. A very restrained bitterness is just enough to balance a low/moderate sweetness in the malt. Flaked corn is adding in just enough quantity to soften the mouth-feel and round off a crisp, dry finish.

New Realm Brewing Co. is more noted locally for its’ Hoptropolis and Hopslandia IPA’s; but they do a solid job with Lagers as well. Their Euphonia German Style Pilsner is quite underrated. United Craft Lager is a solid offering and an excellent gateway beer for a Big Beer drinker who is ready for a more flavorful, fuller bodied beer. It was a perfect go-to beer for grilling out in the hot, humid Atlanta weather over the 4th of July holiday. I highly recommend United Craft Lager if you are in the market for a light, crisp drinkable Lager with an ABV on the lower side. Pairs well with almost any food.
