Appearance: Pale gold with a haze. White, mousse-like head with good retention. Fast carbonation
Aroma: Herbal and biscuit-like malt.
Flavor & Aftertaste: Straight forward Czech Lager. Spicy, herbal flavor on a medium sweet malt backbone. Quite bitter start to finish.
Palate: Crisp and light with low carbonation. Medium length semi-dry finish with bitter aftertaste that lingers for a short time.
Balance & Drinkability: Balanced and drinkable. For those who like a Lager with a crisp, bitter finish.
Service Brewing Co. was founded in 2014 by West Point graduate and Army veteran Kevin Ryan. His new brewery venture was backed by multiple investors, most of which are military veterans. The Savannah, GA based brewery offers four year around beers: a Pale Ale, Rose Pale Ale, IPA and Bohemian Pilsner. As my quest for find some excellent Pilsners made in Georgia continues, I chose their Rally Point Bohemian Style Pilsner to taste test.
The first thing that struck me was how cloudy Rally Point pours out. According to BJCP Guidelines, Czech Pilsners can have some residual yeast resulting in haziness in the final product. So this is acceptable for competitions. On a personal note, I prefer the clean, clear profile of a Pilsner Urquell; but haziness in not out of the ordinary for this style.
The beer exhibits spicy, herbal notes expected from Saaz hops. On the front end is a sweet malt taste that quickly changes over to a typical bitterness that is maintained throughout. A lightly carbonated, crisp mouth-feel finishes semi-dry with a bitterness lingering into the aftertaste. Overall a well-crafted Czech Lager that leans to the bitter side than most.
As a side note, Service Brewing Co. is very active in their community. They annually raise thousands of dollars for local charities, including some that support services to our military veterans. Keep up the good work Service Brewing Co.!
