Commentary
Service Brewing Co. was founded in 2014 by West Point graduate and Army veteran Kevin Ryan. His new brewery venture was backed by multiple investors, most of which are military veterans. The Savannah, GA based brewery offers four year around beers: a Pale Ale, Rose Pale Ale, IPA and Bohemian Pilsner. As my quest for find some excellent Pilsners made in Georgia continues, I chose their Rally Point Bohemian Style Pilsner to taste test.
The first thing that struck me was how cloudy Rally Point pours out. If you are familiar with the brilliant, clear gold color of a Pilsner Urquell, don’t let a bit of haze throw you. According to BJCP Guidelines, Czech (or Bohemian) Pilsners can have some residual yeast resulting in haziness in the final product. So this is acceptable for competitions and it certainly doesn’t interfere with your enjoyment of this pilsner.
The beer exhibits spicy, herbal notes expected from Saaz hops. On the front end is a sweet malt taste that quickly gives way to a notable bitterness that is maintained throughout; but not overwhelming. A lightly carbonated, crisp mouth-feel finishes semi-dry with a bitterness lingering into the aftertaste. Overall a well-crafted Czech style Lager that can satisfy any thirst.
As a side note, Service Brewing Co. is very active in their community. They annually raise thousands of dollars for local charities, including some that support services to our military veterans. Keep up the good work Service Brewing Co.!
