More Oktoberfest beer reviews! This time it is Spaten’s Oktoberfest Ur Marzen. Just like the Paulaner, this is not the official Oktoberfest beer served in Munich. Spaten’s is Oktoberfestbier and it is lighter in color and body than the Marzen.
Oktoberfest Ur Marzen pours a clear, copper to light brown color. The head is foamy with a somewhat shorter retention than the Paulaner; but not by much. Distinctly bready aroma with little hops. formed by nice thick mousse-like foam with tightly packed bubbles, easily three finger thick at the top. It presents light herbal and caramel aromas to the nose. Flavors include a herbal tone, caramel, and light toast. There is the anticipated medium sweetness of malt accompanied by a restrained bitterness culminating in a soft, short finish with subtle but present bitterness. Not too dry.
Bottom line: For your Oktoberfest party, add some bratwurst, potato pancakes and Spaten Oktoberfest Ur Marzen and your guest will enjoy!
