I’ll admit that this is the first Porter I have tried. If they all taste like this one, I am really looking forward to working my way through this style!
Founders Porter pours a dark, coffee color with a thick, creamy head. lt has a thick, silky mouth feel. From the opening sip, you can taste the sweetness of the caramel malts, with hints of coca, which is then followed closely a bitterness that provides excellent balance. It leaves you with a bitter aftertaste, but not overwhelming.
What an excellent job Founders did infusing complexity into this Porter. After some research, I discovered they use three different types of hops: Crystal, Williamette, and Nugget. Additionally, they use four different malts: Chocolate, Munich, Carapils, and Crystal Dark. Nugget hops is used for bittering with Crystal and Williamette for flavor & aroma.
Kudos to Founders on this one. It is full flavored, robust and filling, as you would expect from a Porter. They state that it is a year-round beer; but I would probably still hold off until the weather starts to cool down. It would be an excellent fire-side quaff around Christmas time.
